The koalas are the emblem of Australia. Koalas typically inhabit open eucalypt woodlands, and the leaves of these trees make up most of their diet. Because this eucalypt diet has limited nutritional and caloric content, koalas are largely sedentary and sleep up to 20 hours a day. While the koala was previously classified as Least Concern on the Red List, it was uplisted to Vulnerable in 2016. Koalas are highly affected by the bushfires as their home is currently burning.
